Heat Pump COP Calculator

Measure & analyze system efficiency

Calculate heat pump efficiency: Determine your system’s Coefficient of Performance (COP) by measuring heat output versus electrical input. Higher COP = better efficiency = lower running costs.

COP vs Temperature

How COP varies as outdoor temperature changes from winter to summer conditions.

Understanding COP

COP = 3.5: For every 1 kW of electricity, you get 3.5 kW of heat
COP = 4.0: 75% more efficient than electric resistance heating
COP = 5.0: Ground source or ideal air source systems
Lower COP: System struggling or outdoor temps very cold

Example: COP Calculation

1
Measure heat output: 8 kW
2
Measure electrical input: 2.3 kW
3
COP = Heat Output ÷ Electrical Input = 8 ÷ 2.3 = 3.48
4
Rating: GOOD – Air source HP at moderate conditions

COP Benchmarks

Air Source (Winter)

2.5 – 3.5

Cold outdoor temps reduce efficiency

Air Source (Spring/Fall)

3.5 – 4.5

Moderate conditions, good efficiency

Air Source (Summer)

4.5 – 5.5

Ideal conditions, peak performance

Ground Source Year-round

4.0 – 5.5

Stable temps, consistent efficiency
